How Laser Hair Removal Works
During treatment, our Astanza MeDioStar laser directs pulses of light energy onto the area of skin with undesired hair. The light safely penetrates through the skin and targets the melanin in the hair follicle. The light energy heats up the follicle, destroying the papilla (aka the hair follicle root) and successfully cutting off the hair’s nutrient source.
For long-lasting results, every customer will need multiple treatments. Laser hair removal is only successful on hairs during a specific growth period, the anagen phase. Hair grows in a cycle of three different stages: the anagen phase, the catagen phase, and the telogen phase.
Treating the Right Hair Phase
The anagen phase, known as the active growing stage, is the only phase that laser hair removal treatment is effective in. During this phase, a hair is still attached to the papilla and is actively receiving nutrients and blood supply to promote hair growth. To stop future hair growth, the laser must destroy the papilla while it is still attached to the hair.
The catagen phase, known as the transition phase, is when a hair follicle detaches from the papilla and is cut off from its nutrient source. The telogen phase, known as the resting phase, is when a detached hair rests until it is pushed out and shed by the growth of a new anagen hair. Therefore, starting the hair growth cycle all over again.
Because each strand of hair grows at a different rate, it’s impossible to know when a hair is in its anagen phase.
